Obituary

Sydney Walter Wright 1937-2022
Syd Wright passed away peacefully at the age of 84 with his daughters by his side on
Saturday, May 28, 2022 from complications following a stroke.
Syd was born on June 27, 1937 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is survived by
his daughters, Penny “Nellerpees” Webb and Kate “Katrinkers” Dragoo, and his four
grandchildren: Gillian, Joey, Nate and Matthew “Punkin”, who he lovingly referred to as
“his kids.” He is also survived by his nephew, William Meyer (Jane).
Preceding Syd in death are his wife of 44 years Carol Wright, father Sydney F. Wright,
mother and stepfather Wynne and Bill Martin, and sister Lorraine Meyer.
Syd immigrated to the United States with his mother and sister in 1952, where they first
settled in Los Angeles before building a home in Carmichael. In 1956, Syd graduated from
El Camino High School. In 1958, Syd joined the U.S. Navy and served four years aboard
the USS Caliente and was honorably discharged in 1962. Syd told many stories about his
days aboard the ship and the places it took him.
Syd met the love of his life, Carol, on a rare snowy Sacramento night in 1972 where they
sat and drank coffee and talked until the wee hours. They married on May 11, 1974 and had
two daughters they devoted their lives to.
Syd spent many years as an appliance repairman, after which he worked for McClellan Air
Force Base and the Oakland Army Base as a civilian forklift driver, retiring in 1999. In his
free time Syd enjoyed drawing cartoons, tinkering on old cars and woodworking—especially
building model ships and stagecoaches. Syd was an avid reader and enjoyed trips to book
stores and the library, passing his love of reading down to “his kids.” And of course, he
would never turn down a trip to Thunder Valley to play some slot machines. Above all else,
he loved spending time with his family, especially on Sunday drives, where we would ask
“Where are we going?” and he would always say “Oh, round about,” and we could end up
anywhere. When we pulled back into the driveway, he would never fail to say “Home again,
home again, jiggity jig.”
Syd will be remembered as a jokester and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved
him.
A Military Honors ceremony and interment will be held on Friday, July 1 at 1:45 p.m. at
Sacramento Valley National Cemetery located at 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, California.
Syd’s beloved wife, Carol will be interred with him.
