Dr. Yi Yi Myint was born to U Nyunt and Daw Khin Khin Ohn on April 2, 1947 in Rangoon, Burma. She was their 3rd born child and first daughter.
She attended Methodist English High School in Rangoon from kindergarten through high school. Dr. Myint graduated from the University of Rangoon for college, and then attended the Institute of Medicine I, Rangoon, for medical school. She married the love of her life, Dr. Myo Shin, on May 22, 1971.
After medical school, she completed her internship at Rangoon General Hospital, then served in the National Health Service with her husband in Kalemyo. Dr. Myint was the first woman physician in Kalemyo, and successfully performed the first lower segment cesarean section in that city.
In 1974, she immigrated to the United States with her husband and daughter, Ohnmar. Dr. Myint completed her internship at Memorial Hospital in Rhode Island and residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at New England Medical Center, Tufts University, Boston. After moving to California in 1978, she served as faculty at LAC-USC Medical Center for 19 years. In 1998, she joined the Occupational Medicine Department at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento until she retired in 2014.
Throughout her life, she found joy in traveling with her husband, cooking for loved ones, visiting family and friends, spending time with her 4 grandchildren, and lending a helping hand to the Burmese community. Dr. Myint was a devout Buddhist and ardently practiced Vipassana meditation.
Dr. Myint was especially proud of her family. She is survived by her husband and the love of her life, Dr. Myo Shin; her children, Ohnmar Myo Shin (Scott Sutch), Dr. Thuzar Myo Shin (Matthew Sunderland) and Amanda Mae-Myo Shin (Jonathan Chang); her grandchildren, Caelin Myo Sutch, Kelsey Myint Sutch, Ruby Myo Sunderland, and Wyatt Myo Sunderland; her siblings, U Tin Htut, Daw Nwe Nwe Ohn, and Dr. Zaw Lin. She was preceded in death by her mother, Daw Khin Khin Ohn, her father, U Nyunt, and her eldest brother, Dr. Zaw Win.
Her legacy continues in the relationships she built and the bonds she sustained. It is one of love, generosity, resilience, bravery, and sacrifice. To many, she was more than a friend - she was like a mother, a sister, a daughter. She always put others before herself.
Her spirit lives on in the memories we cherish, the values she passed down, and the love she showered on us. She will forever remain in our hearts.
