Norman Neal Steinbach

1938 — 2026

Roseville

Norm Steinbach was born on August 23, 1938, in Salinas, California, the third of four boys. He grew up in the Salinas Valley, where he developed the strong work ethic, competitive spirit, and love of sports that would remain with him throughout his life.

He graduated from Salinas High School in 1956 and continued his education at Hartnell Junior College, earning an Associate of Arts degree in General Engineering in 1960. In 1963, he graduated from San Jose State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, beginning a career that would span more than 40 years.

While in college, Norm met the love of his life, Shirley. They were married for 58 wonderful years before her passing. They were truly best friends who brought out the best in one another. Together they built a life centered on family, friendship, and shared adventures. Over the years, they formed many treasured friendships—some lasting more than 60 years.

Norm enjoyed a long and successful engineering career, working for several companies in Silicon Valley. In 1995, his work brought him to the Sacramento area, where he later retired.

Retirement was anything but idle for Norm. He stayed active through his Seniors in Retirement Group (SIR’s) and enjoyed golfing twice a week. He was an avid reader, skilled woodworker, and enthusiastic traveler.

Sports were a lifelong passion. Norm played basketball, tennis, and golf, and enjoyed running and bike riding. He faithfully took his daily walks and continued going to the gym until his final days, demonstrating his commitment to health and perseverance.

Norm is survived by his daughter, Melissa Coleman; his son, Brian Steinbach; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Steinbach; and his beloved grandchildren: Matthew Coleman (wife Emily), Justin Coleman (wife Devan), Brianna Johnston (husband Clay), Matthew Schneider, and Nathan Steinbach. He is also survived by his brother, Jerry Steinbach, many nieces and nephews, and his cherished great-grandchildren, Violet, Beau, and Seager, with a fourth great-grandchild expected in August 2026.

Norm will be remembered for his steady strength, quiet determination, deep love for his family, and the example he set through a life well lived. His legacy continues in the generations who follow him and in the many lives he touched.
