Melford Stephen Weiss was born on July 25, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York and passed away peacefully at 88 years of age on October 7, 2025, reuniting with his late wife and love of his life, Paula Weiss, who he married in 1964. Mel was a free spirit, never afraid to voice his opinions but pausing to look at life through the lens of others. He was a proud grandfather, uncle, son, brother, devoted husband, and always present father. He was an adventurer at heart and travelled to the outer edges of the world with his wife by his side. He loved to play tennis, ski and just relax in the pool. Mel would often say he liked to “play professor” but this was selling himself short, as he was a well-respected cultural anthropologist at California State University, Sacramento. He was also a veteran, and served in the US Army and Airborne unit with pride. Mel is survived by his sister, Carol, his two daughters, Nicole and Stacey, and two grandchildren, Connor & Samantha.
Fun Fact: Mel has published two books: Valley City – A Chinese Community in America and The Korean Conspiracy. And he has 50 + years of journaling in his daily calendar.
