In Loving Memory of

Johnie McLaughlin Bridges

July 17, 1928 – June 29, 2026

Johnie McLaughlin Bridges peacefully entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on June 29, 2026, at the age of 97, just weeks shy of her 98th birthday.

Born on July 17, 1928, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Johnie was the beloved daughter of Robert W. McLaughlin and Martha Willoughby McLaughlin and one of nine children. She developed a love of learning early in life and attended Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she became a Bennett Belle, sang in the traveling choir, and graduated in May 1952. She later earned a Master of Education degree from Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan, in 1978.

Johnie began her teaching career in Charlotte in 1953 before relocating to Detroit, where she devoted more than 35 years to teaching kindergarten in the Detroit Public Schools. She believed every child deserved to feel loved and inspired, often filling her classroom with music as she played the piano. She retired in 1988 after a distinguished career in education.

On October 30, 1954, Johnie married Sidney Bridges. Together they built a loving home and were blessed with one daughter, Karmala Bridges Sherwood. Their marriage endured with love and commitment until Sidney’s passing in October 2000.

Faith was central to Johnie’s life. She was a devoted member of Second Grace Methodist Church in Detroit before moving to Boston, and later remained active in a prayer group after relocating to Sacramento, California.

Music brought her great joy throughout her life. She loved singing in the church choir, and her beautiful voice remained a cherished gift. Even in her later years, family and friends delighted in her joyful rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

As the matriarch of the McLaughlin family, Johnie kept generations connected, offering wisdom, encouragement, and unwavering love. Until illness limited her this past spring, she remained a source of strength and inspiration.

Johnie leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Karmala Bridges Sherwood; her son-in-law, James Sherwood Jr.; her grandsons, James Sherwood III and Christopher Sherwood; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Kaiyah Sherwood, Marcellous Sherwood, and Noah Sherwood. She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Johnie’s legacy lives on in the many lives she touched through her faith, dedication to education, love of music, and devotion to family. She will be remembered for her gracious heart, quiet strength, warm smile, and steadfast trust in God.

“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.”Matthew 25:23
