James (Jim) William McKune, affectionately known to his grandchildren as Papa Jim and to others as Jim Bob, left this world on February 3, 2026, in Roseville, California, at the age of 80. Born on April 8, 1945, in Kankakee, Illinois, Jim led a life filled with love, laughter, and hard work, traits that defined not only his character but also his relationships with those he cherished.

A dedicated Pool Resurfacer for Duke Cahill Fiberglass Company, Jim garnered the nickname "Ironman" during his many years in the field. His unwavering commitment to his work was not just about earning a living; it was his way of expressing love for his family. He worked relentlessly to provide for his two beloved daughters, Debbie Monroy and Marcy Newman, who were undoubtedly his proudest accomplishments. He loved them immensely and continually celebrated their achievements, ensuring they knew just how special they were to him.

Jim's personality was characterized by kindness and warmth, traits that drew people to him effortlessly. He was known for his infectious humor and the dazzling smile that could light up any room. It is said that when asked how he was doing, he would quickly respond with, "Oh, pretty good," embodying a spirit of resilience even during difficult times.

Memories shared by his daughters reflect the deep bonds they held with their father. One particularly cherished memory takes them back to when he would go to the grocery store and would ask what they wanted.  They would jokingly shout out their wishes for cookies and ice cream, never expecting him to actually return with these special treats. But, true to his loving nature, Jim would always come back with their requests, leaving them happy and delighted.

Jim’s love extended beyond his immediate family; he also held dear the memories of his childhood with his sister, Sharon. She fondly recalled how he would walk her to school everyday, and the heartwarming moment they found a fifty-cent piece, and how he encouraged her to keep it, showcasing his kind-hearted spirit from a young age.

An avid outdoorsman, Jim had a profound love for nature, taking pleasure in deer hunting and fishing. Two of his favorite meals included any number of Mexican dishes and hamburgers, but his sweet tooth remained strong throughout his life, with ice cream (especially rocky road) being a lifelong favorite that he enjoyed right until the very end.

He leaves behind his sisters, Sharon Prueter (Butch), Susan Pineschi (Alan), Jeanne McKune, Daisie Ferretti (Ross), and brother Paul McKune, along with his cherished grandchildren, Marissa Monroy, Ryan Newman, and Ethan Newman. The many nieces and nephews who admired him, and his former wife, Josie McKune, will also hold his memory close to their hearts.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde (Bill) and Dorothy McKune, along with his brother, David McKune. While the world feels a little dimmer without him, the legacy of love, joy, and laughter he leaves behind will continue to resonate within the lives he touched throughout his journey. Each smile he shared, each act of kindness he performed, and every moment spent with family and friends will be engraved in our hearts, forever honoring the kind-hearted man that he was. Gone but not forgotten.

A family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
