In Loving Memory of Gerald Y Nakayama

Gerald Yasuo Nakayama passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026 in Sacramento, CA. Born in Chicago, Illinois on June 28th, 1946, Gerald or Jerry as most knew him was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Jerry’s life was a tapestry of love, loyalty, humor and generosity to all that knew him and interacted with him.

Jerry’s passion for his profession as a radiation therapy technologist led him to teach and lead in many areas. He was a member of the California Society of Radiologic Technologists and served as their president. He was also a member of the American Society of Radiological Technologists and served on their board of directors. One of the things he enjoyed most during his career and was most passionate about was teaching new students in the radiation therapy technologist program for Radiological Associates of Sacramento. Jerry retired from his career as a Dosimetrist with Radiological Associates of Sacramento in 2013.

Jerry’s love for philanthropy and service was evident in his many years of service to the Sacramento Senator Lions club where he held many offices in the club’s leadership including multiple terms as President and Vice President. He also chaired their various fundraisers throughout the year. Jerry was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and served as chair of the administrative council and board of trustees. He spent many years helping to host the annual Easter pancake breakfast and played on the church softball team.

Jerry’s love of the outdoors and fishing ran deep. He loved camping and learning about the natural world. The mountains in Lake Tahoe and the ocean in Maui were his happy places. In retirement he volunteered with California Fish and Wildlife and took great joy in the various jobs and experiences he got to have during his time serving with them.

Jerry had a wonderfully fun sense of humor, he loved to laugh and make jokes. He was a quiet and humble man though, never liking a fuss to be made over him. Generous with everyone he loved and cared about, he had a giving and gentle spirit.

He is survived by his loving wife, Coleen; his two children, Kimberly Kaplan and her husband, Zak and Matthew Nakayama and his wife Marinelle; his two grandsons, Jaxon Kaplan and Logan Kaplan. He is also survived by his sister, Nora Gurevich, brother-in-law Albert Gurevich, nephew, David Gurevich and niece, Marissa Gurevich.

The family will be holding a private burial service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made to Pacific Whale Foundation or Lions International, organizations that were close to his heart.
