Edward Merrill Smith, age 89, of Roseville, California, passed away on June 15, 2025.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 25, 1936, to Saul and Lillian Smith, Ed was cherished for his warmth, intellect, strong work ethic, and wonderful sense of humor. He was a devoted husband and father, whose unwavering support and inspiration guided his family through life’s joys and challenges.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife, Esperanza, and their three children: Ed, Michael, and Lillian.
A graduate of U.C. Berkeley with a degree in Engineering, Ed’s love for travel led him to Spain, where he met and married Esperanza. Together, they returned to California to help his father manage Ed’s Auto Supply on Fourth Street in San Rafael, which he later owned. Later, Ed became an enrolled agent with the IRS and spent his final years in Roseville.
Ed was a man of many passions. He was an avid sports fan, especially devoted to the Boston Red Sox, a world traveler, a history enthusiast, a dedicated stamp collector, a skilled chess player, and a talented flamenco guitar player and teacher (counting David Broza among his students).

Ed will be laid to rest at Mount Tamalpais Mortuary and Cemetery in San Rafael, California, alongside his mother, Lillian Smith Wexler; his father, Saul Smith; and his brother, Richard Smith.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
