Byron Justus Starr, JR peacefully passed away in Sacramento CA on September 27, 2021, surrounded by loving friends. Byron, JR was known to his family as either Junior or Bernie. He is survived by his son, Bruce of Delaware OH.Byron was preceded in death by his parents, Byron Sr and Mildred (Kelly), his wife MaryAnn (Libertore), his daughter Barbara, as well as brothers Hubert (Violet), Merlin (Judy), and Corwin (Shirley). He will be missed by the many family and friends who knew him. Bernie was born August 15, 1928 in West Unity, OH and spent his childhood primarily in Evansville, IN. As a young man, Bernie worked at the Youngstown airport learning to maintain telephone equipment. He was drafted into the army in 1953 and attended the Signal School at Ft. Monmouth, N.J. and later used his expertise working with Japanese technicians setting up telephone systems at a place called Ft. Zama in Japan. He was honorably discharged at the end of 1954. He married Nancy Baker and settled in Warren, working for The Warren Telephone Company until moving to Mansfield Ohio around 1978. Bernie had a long career in the telephone industry, eventually settling in Hood River, OR. He was known for his tenacious work ethic and willingness to do what was needed. Bernie and MaryAnn traveled as often as they could, including many years of “wintering” in the Phoenix, AZ area. They both loved to travel, play golf and Bernie loved MaryAnn’s Italian cooking. After MaryAnn’s passing, Bernie relocated to The Dalles, OR where he enjoyed a breathtaking view overlooking the Columbia River gorge. Bernie made friends easily, and was one of the most good-natured, lovable, and friendly people on earth. He always had a good word for everyone, and was famous for saying how great he was doing no matter the circumstances! Bernie will be laid to rest alongside his mother and father at the Six Mile Cemetery in Bluffton IN. No services will be held.
